Heroes
I caught a repeat of the first three episodes of Heroes over the weekend. I wasn't going to bother, but I thought I'd give it a chance and I was hooked from the begining. Mostly formulaic elements... mutants, a mystery code, murders, cops, cheerleaders... but a few new ideas and snappy editing make it a must see. Currently it's on Sci Fi on Monday nights at 10pm, comming to BBC2 later in the year. http://www.scifiuk.com/heroes/ | | Sunday, February 4th, 2007 | | 12:18 pm |

new arrival
Leon Thomas Jones was born yesterday, 1st Nov 2006, at 6pm, weighing 7st 13. Christine and Leon are both well. He's a cutie - dark curly hair, sideburns, and a seriously cool disposition :) Toby | | Thursday, October 26th, 2006 | | 8:01 pm |

no news, says report I wrote this yesterday but forgot to post it, so any references to yesterday is actually yesterday's yesterday, ok?Yesterday Christine had another examination - BillyBob is 4/5ths engaged, which means he's on his way, but taking his time. Lots of kicking and hiccups, and he's in the right position, quite low down now, but no way of knowing when he'll make an appearance. The examination was early, 9.40, and it was a lovely morning as we walked up to the Lantern centre. And while I held Christine's hand and slowed to her pace, somehow the nervousness I had felt recently changed to eagerness and excitement. Cant wait to meet him :) The astute amongst you may have realised that it was Monday yesterday... no I hadn't started paternity leave early, I had both a dentist and a doc appointment to go to, so I'd negotiated the day off. Wasn't restful though! M&D came over and, like mini whirlwinds tidied up the kitchen, front garden, hedge, lollipop tree and borders! Me, I ended up digging out gloop from the back drain (glue and grout and sawdust from the kitchen works I believe). Took a while but I eventually got it flowing - worth the effort as we'll need it to empty the birthing pool (it comes with an industrial pump!). Now I'm back at work, have to try to concentrate on learning the system, quite hard! Wondering when my phone will buzz and I'll rush to the train :) Can't wait :) update... some contractions last night, but it's all calmed down again, so maybe he'll make us wait after all | | Monday, September 18th, 2006 | | 6:46 pm |
New job!
I started a new job today! It's a company called The Automation Partnership, in Royston, who make robots for the life sciences (cell storage, cultures, that sort of thing, not animal testing or GM). I'm going to be doing software support for two of their existing products - bit of coding, bit of solving user's problems. Should be fun :) Went by train, which went very well, 10min walk from the station and I arrived bang on 9am. Lots of people to meet, forms to fill in, documents to read! I was impressed that they had a PC up and running for me, the org chart already had me on it, and my photo, that they took as I stepped in the door, was up on the intranet by lunchtime! Everyone seemed genuinely pleased to see me, and I've even got a 'buddy' - someone whom I can ask questions without feeling I'm interfering. It's a nice bright office, and I get on well with my boss, so so far I'm very pleased and I think I'm going to like it there :) | | Tuesday, September 5th, 2006 | | 11:47 pm |

A Scanner Darkly karohemd, belaroo and myself met at Arts and had a delicious crepe, then headed into 'A scanner, darkly'. Well, I'd not read the book, so didn't know quite what to expect. Visually it's a bit like an animated graphic novel with the actors superimposed. Interesting, but not as artistic as Renaissance. There was a lot of well studied character mannerisms of addicts, very well done, and a bit of a looping plot, but as it was Philip K Dick, I was expecting it to be more SF, to be honest. There was one interesting effect however; the undercover cops have suits that hide their identity and shimmer, switching between millions of people - one scene with two of these suits talking to each other made my brain go into meltdown - suddenly I lost my grasp on who was who and had a moment of panic - I assume that's what a 'bad trip' would be like, so that was interesting... but not something I'd like to repeat, thank you! Cheers to karohemd for organising :) | | Wednesday, August 9th, 2006 | | 4:36 pm |

Nuchal scan video
When we had the nuchal scan done, I asked if I could take a video... 'we don't really' was the half harted response. However, I was allowed to take a photo of Christine lying on the bed. And I thought... well I've got my camera out now, and it doesn't look like a video camera, so if I'm subtle... Afterwards, when I told Christine, she gasped and said I might have got them into trouble, but hey, we're paying a lot for this scan, so I think I jolly well ought to be allowed to take a video! Of course, it came out sideways, but after a bit of messing about, I've managed to rotate it the right way round, and extracted a good clear bit. Here he or she is, doing a headstand and waving those little legs and arms about! Samba! | | Friday, April 21st, 2006 | | 10:22 pm |
Freecycle
A college at work told me about Freecycle a few days ago. It's an email list where people offer up stuff they don't need anymore, for free, to anyone who can use it, rather than throwing it away. It's great! Someone offered a Sony CD Walkman they didn't want, and I asked for it for Christine for while she's in hospital. This tickled the lady, and she walked round to my office with her own little baby, and gave the CD player to me, for free. There's all sorts of things offered; pots of paint, old cars, wardrobes, bulbs, you name it. And there's lists all over the world. Take a look at the Cambridge area and find your local group! | | Sunday, April 9th, 2006 | | 6:39 pm |
Christine and I went to Al Casbah on Mill Road on Friday, with my friend Jane and her partner Garry. Starters I could eat forever, delicious flame grilled lamb, gorgeous oniony rice. Highly recommended! |
